it’s all born from story.
I see life as a collection of stories unfolding. My work involves weaving stories, illustrating stories and building three-dimensional garden worlds to explore stories. I collect bits of narratives and knit them into richly-layered conceptual and visual tales that are greater than the sum of their parts. Though my earlier work focused primarily on visual explorations, behind-the-scenes narratives always propelled them forward. My intention with current work is to breathe life into and share those stories in evermore sophisticated ways to complement and add further depth to the visual mediums I employ.
the process
The alchemy of traditional materials is central to my artistic process: seeds, soil and terracotta in the garden, and pencils and paints in the studio. Gouache, watercolor, inks, dry media, sable-hair brushes and French cotton-rag paper are the basic ingredients combined in varying degrees with unique recipes for each project. Though digital technology aids editing and design, the use of traditional hand-painting techniques is the cornerstone of my approach.

the inspiration
The way of life, the change of seasons and the natural world on the idyllic coast of southern Maine offer never-ending inspiration for my work. Woodland explorations, engagement with wildlife and my own gardens all serve to nourish the creative spirit and inspire work that strives to express beauty and a connection to nature.
